Almost hidden from view, nestled within the shrubs along the sidewalk, today I noticed a stone pillar that I have never noticed before. It stands like a beacon of the past.
The long grasses and shrubs seem to have been cleared from around the base of this pillar, maybe recently cleared which is why I noticed it today.
I’m curious about its original purpose, and if it might have been the cornerstone to a larger fence, gate or grand entrance. It definitely looks like it was a piece of a larger design, rather than a stand alone piece of cemented rock art!
It is curious to consider how this project may have been created, the rock pillar surprisingly cylindrical, with a larger top that appears more of an afterthought or that it was created later, with different rocks and stuck on top. It seems out of place, like it may have come from a countryside cottage in rural England, and landed here… without the garden or the cottage, or perhaps was built with memories of something similar on these lands.
Stones carry many stories, and I wonder what stories these stones might tell about where they’ve come from and how they landed in this pillar… and I remain curious that the pillar is still standing, after many decades… though signs of aging are definitely visible in some of the lower edges, as it is beginning to crumble. Still, this pillar had likely weathered many storms, many freezes and thaws from winter to spring, and remains a significant presence to the entrance of this home.
I can imagine saying, “Coming to the house with the large stone pillar” as something that sets it apart from other homes in the area… a beacon to show the way.
