After a few snowy, cloudy days the sun was out in all its glory today… bringing along beautiful blue skies and frigid temperatures! Often the sunniest days, are also the coldest, but it was fascinating to watch the sun travel the sky today.
Since we are only a few days away from the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, the sun is at its lowest position in the sky. I have wonderful south facing windows and today I enjoyed the warmth of the sun from the indoors! Since the big elm tree in front of my house was cut down earlier this Fall, I now had a front row seat to watching the sun travel across the sky and I never actually realized how low on the horizon it stays at this time of the year!
(You can read about my farewell to my tree in these two posts linked below)…
But today what I noticed was the sun!
What I was most curious, is that how in all my life until now, have I never really paid attention to the position of the sun on the horizon? In the past, I have noticed the position of the sun in the summer, as it makes its journey up and over my house, and the long days of sunshine… but this is the first time I have truly paid close attention to the sun’s winter journey across the southern sky.
Maybe it was more apparent with the wide open space without a tree blocking the view of the sun… but it truly never made it very high over the houses and was visible in the southern sky throughout the day.

Watching the sun today, made me feel like it was actually very close and near… it only really seemed to travel over a few houses from my vantage point from sun rise until it started setting. Offering slightly different light at each moment in the day; six of which I’ve captured here.
Something about these pictures captivates me and I just keep looking from one to the other in fascination! I felt the wonder and awe throughout the day as I captured the pictures, and now seeing the light reflected back I feel that awe again and it is even more magnified as bask in the gloriousness of the sun’s journey.
Feeling warmed and grateful for the sun’s presence today!
