While I understand with the idiom to describe rapid growth, “You’re growing like a weed,” since so many weeds grow rapidly and without any extra care or nurturing - it just happens… after nearly a week away, I came home to peas growing in their pods where there were only blossoms when I left.
I began to wonder, why has no one ever coined the phrase, “You’re growing like a pea!” They are plant that seems to go from blossom to being edible in a matter of days, and that is even more rapid growth than most weeds!
Throughout this week I’ve been observing growth keenly, as my eldest child surpassed me in height… and literally if felt like overnight! Just a few weeks ago, he still had nearly an inch to grow before he was as tall as me… and then two days ago when he was standing next to his younger sibling, he suddenly looked MUCH taller! We stood back to back, and he had “grown like a pea”, and just like that he is taller than me!
Honestly, I had a moment of both excitement and grief - how does it still feel like just yesterday that I held him for the first time… and now he growing and thriving, in so many ways (not just physical growth), and it is wonderful and incredible and amazing… and with most exciting and significant changes in life, there is also a tinge of sadness and nostalgia and memories all flood in at the same time!
And so, I’d much rather say that he’s “growing like a pea”, sweet, bright, tender and growing into something incredible, as opposed to “growing like a weed”, that brings up many more negative connotations of being invasive, wild and unruly (which can also be true through the teenage years… but I’m hoping for more of the former!)
