A Year of Noticing - Day 28
Sometimes a change of direction is needed for awhile... inspired by the wild geese
Today I was surprised to notice that many flocks of Canada geese seemed to be flying towards the north… instead of flying south for their warm weather migration.
It was unseasonably warm weather for late October, and I wondered if maybe the geese were wanting to make the most of the beautiful weather and soak up some sun rays before they continued their journey south… but at one point I looked up and saw at least twenty different flocks on the horizon, all heading north??
Sometimes I can get distracted by things that can take me in another direction… and this isnt’ always a bad thing. Sometimes I can get a little stuck in the “to do” list and so going in another direction to enjoy something for fun and pleasure can be a pleasant experience… and maybe that’s what some of these geese decided to do! When we are on a long and challenging journey, why not take some breaks to enjoy the company of some friends, catch some sun rays and spend a bit of time resting and relaxing!
I also took a cue from these geese… since we will have one more warm day… tomorrow looks like a great day to enjoy the outdoors and do a little more prep for winter - putting away the rain barrels, raking some leaves and absorbing some vitamin D - with the hopes of storing it for the shorter and colder days that are coming!
Seeing the geese also reminds me of the poem by Mary Oliver, aptly named “Wild Geese”… I don’t read a lot of poetry, but over the past year I’ve found myself drawn to the beautifully crafted words of Mary Oliver a few times and I went back to read this poem. If you haven’t checked it out… maybe today is the day to take a little diversion and enjoy her words also, pause, absorb and feel into the wisdom of the wild geese!
